People always have this image in their mind of a truck driver being a man with a big old stomach, big old beard and wearing overalls,” says Clarissa Rankin. However, the Black female commercial truck driver is part of a movement to change that.

In her early trucking years, there were some difficulties for Rankin. But the 36-year-old gained more experience and eventually started her own trucking company,  And Rankin isn’t alone.

Vanita Johnson made the transition from teaching. “You have that support route there to help you navigate through this male-populated industry, and it offers freedom and travel.” Johnson and Rankin are encouraging more women to get into the space, especially now.

The commercial trucking space is still recovering from the massive shortages during the Covid pandemic, and associations such Women in Trucking, are encouraging women to join the business.

Career options for Black women can be unlimited and we can support. With commercial truck driving proving to be a profitable job, encourage Black women to take on untraditional jobs. This is also an opportunity for Black men to help new drivers feel more welcomed in the industry.
