Black athletes have complained for years about the lack of attention directed toward HBCU sports. Not necessarily in recognition, but in resources. HBCU football programs have produced dozens of professional level players but imagine how many more students could go pro with more resources.
Deion Sanders, famous former NFL football player turned coach, signed up to take the reigns of Jackson State University’s football program in 2020. Sanders led the team to two consecutive Celebration Bowl appearances and the first undefeated season in school history. The impact off the field was even greater.
Sanders helped build the school’s presence nationally through social media and media appearances, which makes his sudden departure to the University of Colorado confusing for some.
While there are criticisms of Sanders’ move, the reality is that his tenure at Jackson State could go on to inspire more former players to pursue coaching at HBCUs. A winning culture at an HBCU is possible and Sanders proved it.
