We’ve all experienced burnout, especially when it’s tied to workplace issues. Many of us may even have dreamed of traveling the world to start the healing process. That’s what happened to Lawrence Philips.
The stress of his job was quickly leading him down the path to burnout, so Philips resigned and began planning his global journey. Ten months later, he’d set foot on all seven continents. But along his journey, he noted the lack of resources and information for Black travelers around the world.
Philips remembered learning about Victor Hugo Green’s Green Book, which helped Black travelers traverse America safely during Jim Crow and segregation. Following in his footsteps, Philips created The Green Book Global.
Philips’s site provides modern Black travelers with an all-in-one travel spot. Black travelers leave reviews and information about cities they’ve visited. The site also provides a location to book everything from flights to hotels and experiences.
Global travel is more open now than ever. At the same time, traveling while Black still brings uncertainties, safety concerns, and needs unique to our community. But as Philips reminds us, our history and community always has the answers we need to thrive.
