Black students make up one-third of all college scholarship applications. Yet, we receive only about 28 percent of the benefits. Much of this can be attributed to systemic biases in those gifting funds. There are, however, some great scholarships just for us.
This organization bestows scholarships of up to $30,000 for a four-year degree. The funds are given out to minority students with financial need.
Microsoft gives up to $20,000 over four years to pay for an undergrad degree. The scholarship is given to high school seniors who will be majoring in engineering, computer science, computer information systems, finance, or business administration.
The Rob Brown scholarship fund gifts up to $40,000 throughout a college career to economically needy Black students pursuing study in public service.
There are tens of thousands of scholarships out there. Just because the game is obviously rigged against us doesn’t mean we don’t play it to win.
