On October 15, the Small Business Administration (SBA) announced that its Small Business Disaster Loan Program was out of money. The program offers loans to small businesses, homeowners, and renters to recover from natural disasters.

The funding has been exhausted due to increased demand for loans after Hurricane Helene. However, the SBA application portal is still open in anticipation that Congress will approve additional funding for the program.

Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson has promised that Congress will provide funds after the presidential election. The SBA has received approximately 37,000 relief applications from those affected by Hurricane Helene and more than 12,000 applications from those affected by Hurricane Milton.

The SBA offers loans up to $2 million for businesses, $500,000 for homeowners, and $100,000 for renters and landlords. Anyone interested in applying for a loan can go to sba.gov/disaster or call the SBA customer service center at 800-659-2955 to see if they are eligible.

“We know that swift financial relief can help communities recover quickly to stabilize local economies,” said SBA Administrator Isabel Casillas Guzman. “While we await Congress to provide much-needed funding, we strongly encourage eligible businesses and households to apply for SBA disaster loans.”
