Black people only make up less than 15% of the population of America. So to have a thriving business, you have to cater to white people, culture, and tastes, right?

Wrong! These businesses invested in Blackness and found incredible success – and they didn’t have to cater to whiteness. Check them out!

Black family-owned Indianapolis pizzeria The Missing Brick caters to Black tastes, including “The Trap Pizza,” and a choice between “Hip-Hop” or “R&B” salads. They also make sure to source their ingredients from Black suppliers

Alyson Rae Lawson is a franchise owner of a 7-11 store in Texas that recently broke records for an extremely successful collaboration with Black Girl Magic wine, from Black-owned winery McBride Sisters.

Ayo Foods has created a line of frozen, West African-inspired meals – now being sold at Whole foods. They were inspired to “[share] some of our family’s favorite recipes that were under-represented in mainstream grocery stores,” like cassava soup and jollof rice.

These Black entrepreneurs’ success shows that despite what you may have heard, you don’t have to compromise your culture or cater to mainstream, white tastes in order to find success.

Investing in Black people and Black culture is a viable path toward a profitable business!
