Spur of the moment shopping trips can feel like a therapy session. But just like therapy, they’re expensive. This is called “emotional spending,” and here’s how to pinpoint it! Ask yourself these questions.
#1: Do I actually like this?
Sometimes we buy things just because they happen to be on sale – but we don't actually really want them. We feel like not buying would almost be irresponsible, but we must fight this urge!
#2: Stacking ‘Em Up
Most retailers don’t let you use multiple coupons on the same item – this is called “stacking.” But there’s a major loophole! You usually CAN use a retailer coupon with a manufacturer coupon. For example, if a retailer like Target offers a coupon on Colgate toothpaste, and a manufacturer like Colgate offers their own coupon on the same toothpaste, you can stack them together for major savings!
#3: When am I going to wear that?
During emotional times we want to make bold changes and our wardrobe feels like the perfect place to start. We buy statement items that make us feel like we're bringing our style in a whole new direction – but often they just collect dust in our closets.
We often use retail therapy to feel better. But when we actually confront why we’re spending, we can overcome these triggers and see that they don’t have any actual power!
