President Biden and Vice President Harris recently announced an executive order intended to create advancement for underserved communities. This has the potential to make a huge impact, depending on how the administration plans to implement it.
But what’s actually in the plan?
#1: Workers’ Rights
The Department of Labor plans to protect low and medium-income workers, who are most likely to be the victims of wage theft and low pay. The department also plans to address the unique barriers women and workers of color face, including trouble accessing unemployment benefits.
#2: Housing Discrimination
The Department of Housing and Urban Development is attempting to eliminate racial gaps in housing and bias during the home buying process. This plan is also set to address the alarming rates of homelessness among underprivileged communities.
#3: Internet Access
The Department of Commerce is investing approximately $50 billion to bring broadband access to more people. This has the potential to close the “digital divide” that prevents poor and rural areas from accessing the internet.
This announcement is huge! Because we’re disportionately affected by these issues, we could be greatly impacted by this effort.
Keep in mind, however: the administration has not explicitly said how this plan will be rolled out, and it’s too early to tell how successful it will really be.
