Black people tend to make less money – but that doesn't stop us from being generous! According to a new report, Black people donate a higher percentage of their wealth than any other race – and the amount is increasing.
We’re often labeled as needy “welfare queens,” or are characterized as “stingy” and “self-centered” when it comes to how we spend our money. But this couldn't be further from the truth.
More than 60% of Black families donate regularly – which adds up to over $11 billion each year. This supports countless charities, causes and community organizations. But the stereotype about us being “stingy” is a part of a bigger issue.
The ongoing narrative that we aren't philanthropic is deeply rooted in anti-Blackness and classism. This speaks to our resilience and generosity – because even though we don’t get seen as philanthropists, we still continue to help our communities and those in need.
But we don’t need to appease white minds or get credit for our charity work.
The stereotype that we’re less likely to give, and are instead typically the receivers of charity, is a dangerous, white supremacist lie. We can’t let these narratives succeed in demeaning us – we know the truth!
