Black people watch a lot of television which makes us some of the most profitable consumers. This gives us power – but only if we decide to use it.

For several years, we’ve watched far more television than any other group. And during the pandemic, TV watching increased for everyone. Why is our high TV consumption a good thing for us?

Television is saturated with so many brands that we might not notice all that we’re being exposed to. Whether a commercial tells people to buy sneakers or a TV show’s product placement shows viewers an upcoming band, we should be the prime consumer in mind. Our opinions matter and our dollars are powerful – but we’re being forgotten.

We consume so much media, we have the power to make or break brands. A business’ success is reliant on how well it's perceived by consumers. But when TV executives and brands don’t use people that look like us, they’re missing out on billions – and we’re being underrepresented.

If we don't support products that don’t cater to us, they’ll fail! It’s about time we wield this power.

The opinion of the Black consumer holds so much weight. Let’s make sure we’re giving our money to brands and outlets that actually care about us!
