#1 Beans

Not only are beans incredibly cheap, but they are also great for the digestive system and can be eaten for any meal of the day. From red beans and rice to black-eyed peas, these versatile legumes will keep the family full without a hefty cost.

#2 Canned and Frozen Vegetables

If we had the choice, we'd all stick with fresh vegetables. But the truth is the fresher the veggie, the more expensive it is. Canned and frozen vegetables are cheap alternatives that can be used in any recipe for a fraction of the price.

#3 Rice

Rice is the world's most consumed food for a reason. Its versatility and affordability make it an essential item in every household.

#4 Pasta

Pasta seems like an obvious choice, but it's a staple for a reason. Most stores sell a pound of pasta for around a dollar. Often used in soups, casseroles, or as main dishes, the list of meal ideas is endless.

#5 Flour and Ground Cornmeal

Flour and ground cornmeal should have a spot in the pantry. These grains can extend any meal from cornbread to hoecakes.

Just because money is tight doesn't mean that delicious, cheap, and, most importantly, healthy foods can be made at home and fit within tight budgets.
