Martin Luther King Jr. in his 1967 book “Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community” advocated for the guaranteed income as the solution to poverty in America. Now the concept has grown in political and fiscal popularity.
So how does this work and what can it do for us?
The idea is simple. People get a set amount of money, no strings attached, each month. Recipients use the money freely to improve their lives.
Guaranteed income could greatly help the Black community. With a set amount of income coming in every month more of us can easily manage our responsibilities and have money left over to grow our careers or creative pursuits.
A great example of a program like this being put in practice is Georgia where over 650 Black women received $850 per month in a $13 million initiative over the next two years.
Guaranteed income can help the Black community ease the stresses of finances. We can enjoy our life and properly plan for our future. This is definitely a policy we should push for in the policy arena.
