Universal basic income has been a well-advocated concept for decades . Its goal? Closing the wealth gap by providing unrestricted cash payments to those who need it most. Now it seems that popular feelings around this concept have progressed rapidly.
Today universal basic income has become more than just a dream. Since 2020, over four dozen pilot programs across the country have been established to address this societal need.
One great example of these types of programs in practice is in Atlanta where residents who live below the poverty line will receive $400 a month for a year. This type of consistent money can change the lives of Black people living in the area and so far, it seems it has.
Research has found that many who have received money through this program have gotten into full-time employment or finally became financially stable enough to chase after their other passions and dreams.
These programs could do wonders for our people as more of the budding talent and genius in our community could emerge.
With the rise of universal basic income programs, we now have a strand of reality to latch onto the dream of fair and equitable access to resources for our people. This can be a reality everywhere and we have the power to make it happen.
