There is no place on earth untouched by our people, and Europe is no exception. Traveling in Europe while Black, however, can be a hit-or-miss situation.
There are sweet spots, though, that hit all the marks and open doors for us to learn even more about our greatness.
#1: Portugal
This country, once the center of the Atlantic slave trade, is said to be one of the most welcoming European destinations for Black travelers. You can also lower costs by traveling outside of June through August, which is their peak season.
#2: Prague
Excluding the flight, Prague is incredibly cheap to visit. Many top tourist destinations are free; a hotel stay typically costs less than $200 a night. It’s also apparently home to small Black settlements that have remained throughout the early 18th century.
#3: Bulgaria
A lovely hotel in a major city in Bulgaria goes for as little as $22-$38 per night. The exchange rate here is phenomenal for the U.S. dollar. Black Bulgars are also a rich part of the country’s history, and are often talked about as a major ethnic group.
There are plenty of European countries that are welcoming to Black folks AND inexpensive to visit. Feeling international? Experience a unique take on our culture.
