Book sales increased by 29% during the pandemic. Are you interested in expanding your library but aren’t sure where to start? Check out a Black-owned bookstore! If there are none in your area, try bookshop.org to support a local Black bookstore while shopping online.
Or see if one of these Black-owned literary spots is in your city.
#1: The Lit Bar, Bronx, NY
The best place to buy an intellectually stimulating novel and a robust bottle of wine is at the Lit Bar, a bookstore located in the Bronx. This bookshop, founded by Bronx native Noelle Santos, is the only indie bookstore serving Bronx residents!
#2: Harriet’s Bookshop, Philadelphia, PA
Harriet’s Bookshop is located in the heart of Philly. Since this “jawn” highlights women writers and activists, it’s the best place in the city to pick up the creative works of Zora Neale Hurston or Audre Lorde.
#3: Marcus Books, Oakland, CA
Named after the beloved Marcus Garvey, this independent, Black-owned bookstore is the oldest in the U.S and has hosted readings by Malcolm X, Toni Morrisson, and Maya Angelou!
#4: Shelves Bookstore, Charlotte, North Carolina
Shelves is both an online and pop up bookshop located in Charlotte, North Carolina. It collaborates with other small Black businesses in the Charlotte area to strengthen the presence and power of Black entrepreneurship.
