Our people are more likely to suffer from obesity than anyone else in this country. Most of that is brought on by genetics tied to generational trauma. With new breakthrough medicines, we could see a new Black health and wellness era.

In 2013, the American Medical Association finally recognized that obesity isn't some form of laziness but an actual disease. This is excellent news because it could result in a better understanding of the causes of obesity and ways to prevent and treat it. This could mean better patient health and outcomes, but not without challenges for some.

A combination of supplier shortages and subpar care means many of us miss out on a life-changing opportunity. These newer treatments could be a gateway to wellness for our community. But there is a major drawback.

Cost. For example, one month's supply of Ozempic – a prescription drug targeting type 2 diabetes being considered by the FDA as a weight loss medication  –  can cost over $1,300 without insurance.

Access to medicines that treat obesity as the disease it is would have MASSIVE positive impacts on the Black community. But the costs associated with them counters any potential impact they could have.

Health, wellness, and wealth are intricately connected. When we champion more affordable access to medical care for our community, we boost our health and wealth.
