Betting on sports has always been popular, despite being illegal in many states. As more and more states legalize it, however, there are more options than ever: casinos, bars, restaurants, and online portals give people options to win big – or lose it all.
Gambling is popular among all racial groups, but it tends to have the most negative impacts on Black communities. Is it possible to gamble responsibly?
#1: Entertainment Only
Most risky behavior happens when gamblers see the activity as a means to make money instead of just as entertainment. It is NOT a reliable way to make money!
#2: Set Limits
Nobody should EVER gamble with money they can’t afford to lose. But limits aren’t just about money – gamblers should set time limits; most casinos don’t have clocks or windows, so people lose track of time. Another limit: gambling should only be done sober, so good judgment stays intact.
#3: Don’t Compete
Gambling environments can be competitive, but this leads gamblers to take unnecessary risks and overspend. Competing with oneself is also dangerous – chasing one’s previous wins or trying to avenge losses could cause addiction or debt.
Gambling of any kind should be approached with extreme caution. Gambling responsibly is VERY difficult, but by following this advice anyone who wants to give it a try has the best shot at not losing everything.
