Target is setting a new precedent for their company that could impact millions. From now on, Target will close all of its stores on Thanksgiving! Why is this such a big win for retail workers?

Now, Target employees are given the opportunity to spend more time with their families.

And, as the news of Target’s holiday closures spread, more companies are following suit. Could this become the new normal?

Protests over retail and grocery stores being open on major holidays have been very popular for several years – and it seems that some corporations have finally given into this positive peer pressure.

Stores like Kohls and Best Buy are also closing their doors. This is undoubtedly a good step for workers – but there’s a catch.

Many of these corporations will try to spin the move as being pro-worker – but then they’ll open right back up on Black Friday, and workers will be thrust into one of the most difficult, hazardous, stressful shopping days of the year.

One’s job should not be the center of their world. We deserve time off with our families. One holiday off is a move in the right direction, and we should encourage more companies to follow suit. But it doesn’t change the overall exploitative nature of most retail workers’ jobs the rest of the year.
