When Kiko Davis’ late husband, Grammy award-winning music pioneer Don Davis, opened First Independence Bank in 1970, his vision was to improve the economic conditions of the Black community across Detroit, MI.

After his death in 2014, Kiko courageously stepped her game up.

First Independence is now the 10th largest Black-owned financial institution in the country, thanks to her leadership as majority stockholder.

And while staying ahead in an evolving industry is no small feat, Kiko’s proudest accomplishments are found in the good works she performs on her community’s behalf.

When asked about her purpose in business and the best strategy for success, Kiko shared with Rolling Out magazine her approach to developing others.

“People tend to lend the very best of themselves when they feel leaders are passionate about them and their environment.” As the only woman to currently hold such a prestigious position, her actions are speaking louder than her words.

She manages the Donald Davis Living Trust, and created the Don Davis Legacy Foundation to support organizations that uphold education as a top priority - such as the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and the Lawrence P. Doss Scholarship Foundation.

When asked why she pours so much of herself into progressing her community, Kiko’s response knocked it out the park.

“Helping others reach their full potential adds more to your life than anyone could ever take away,” she says.

This is a woman whose legacy is grounded in love for her people, setting an example of how ownership provides greater opportunities to give generously.
