The United Automobile Workers union (U.A.W.) have announced that 7,000 more members would join in its strike against the big three United States automakers. This expansion comes just two weeks after strikes initially began.
This strike expansion is being made in an effort to increase pressure mainly on Ford and General Motors as the union believes that the two corporations have failed to appropriately meet worker demands for higher wages and increased benefits.
In a live-streamed video to union members, U.A.W. president Shawn Fain gave remarks on the stalemate between the unions and corporations. “Ford and G.M. have refused to make meaningful progress at the bargaining table,” he said.
One of the big three automakers has been more responsive to the union’s demands. Stellantis has offered a deal including a 20% wage increase through 2027 for full-time employees, and a 6% company match for retirement contributions according to CBS News.
As bargaining between auto corporations and the U.A.W continue, it has been reported that more strike expansions may soon follow.
